Since today is tax day, it seemed as good a time as any to talk about spring cleaning. I mean, we've all filed those returns, March Madness is over, and the weather is gorgeous -- so there's no more excuses for not getting the cleaning done!

We know how daunting spring cleaning can be, and we're here to help! Here's a list of items that should be on everyone's spring cleaning to-do:

1. Change the furnace filter: Just because you're not running the heat, doesn't mean you shouldn't change your filter! This filter gets used with both the heat and the air conditioning -- and a dirty filter not only compromises the quality of your air, but a dirty filter can run down your HVAC unit much more quickly. Pro tip: check your filter monthly; change quarterly.

2. Schedule an AC tune-up -- so you'll avoid any unpleasant surprises the next time it hits 85 and you try to run your air conditioning... and it makes a funny noise.

3. Window treatment: replace any damaged screens, re-caulk where needed, and give them a good cleaning inside and out so you can enjoy the spring sunshine!

4. Check your smoke detectors.

5. Outdoor maintenance: Pick up yard waste; schedule an estimate for any tree/branch removal; mulch; plant.

6. Sell your junk: Craigslist is a great way to sell larger-ticket items, and is much more convenient than a larger yard sale.

7. Donate your stuff: Load up the car and head to a donation center. For larger items, many non-profits will send a truck to your home. Tip: ask for a receipt and save it for next year's taxes!

8. Review your budget: Is there anything you'd like to save for? Can you trim your budget in any way?

9. Check in with your insurance agent: Is anything about to change -- any births? kids getting their temps? home renovations? Are you eligible for any discounts?

10. Enjoy yourself! It's finally spring -- soak up the sunshine and longer days doing something you enjoy, with people you love.
